Chinese Hostage Negotiations

On August 17, 2004, Zhang Kailin armed himself with two kitchen knives and took two children hostage in a fifth-floor classroom of a children's center in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province in China. Patrol police, a SWAT team and firefighters rushed to the site to intervene. Zhang bargained with authorities for over two hours, when he finally attempted to harm a hostage.

Zhang Kailin made three demands.

The hostage rescue team considered the demands.

A counter offer was rejected.

The head negotiator set his terms.

Negotiations were successful.

Everyone went home for supper except the criminal.

    I'm trying to figure out why the whole thing took 2 hours.

    I guess the folks next door went out for an early mu shu or something and the cops had to wait for them to return home to borrow their apartment.

    Why the dramatic hanging out the window with a pistol? Looked like a nice, clean shot with a rifle or carbine from the street to me.
