People of the Gun

What happens when a misinformed columnist decides to deride online gun owners? They set the record straight.

Laura Washington, you are incorrect. We are not necessarily white rural men, although we do not seek to demean white rural men. We include the women and African Americans that you seem to believe are anti-gun. We also include people from all races, nationalities, and sexual orientations. Although some of us are members of the NRA, the NRA does not direct us. Freedom of choice directs us. Self determination directs us. Liberty directs us.

Know what Laura? We could include you too. We do not stand in the way of you purchasing a legal firearm for your own protection or enjoyment. Any time you feel like learning to shoot, contact one of us. Anytime you decide your life is more important than a criminal's decision to take it, contact one of us. When you come to realize that a 911 dispatcher is not a policeman in your pocket, contact us. We will show you the way. We welcome you to join us too.

Not a knock, especially because I'm debating sending my picture too (I like my pseudo-anonymity), but the majority of the folks on "People of the Gun" seem to be rural white males.

Look at the pictures: Out of ~70 folks 12 are women. 35 seem to be rural white males; meaning they're shooting in the open or have duck hunting paraphernalia around. Further, there are no black people there.

35/70=50% -> Seem to be rural white males.

58/70=82% -> Seem to be white males.

12/70=17% -> Are women.

I hate to give creedence to Washington's argument, but we just seem to be validating her point.

Of course they are shooting/hunting in the open. Generally, it's frowned on to hunt/shoot outside in urban areas. Did you even think before posting such an inane observation?

Less:

I live in one of the largest urban areas in the Pacific Northwest.

I'm one of those "rural white males" you see pictured, because the only place I can shoot my rifle is outside of the metroplex.

Unless you want me to get arrested...

Will, take a chill... Washington posts an article about gun owners being rural white males that are NRA organized. Alphecca starts a site to portray gun owners as not necessarily NRA organized, everyday folk. So what does people of the gun look an awful lot like? I see logos that could easily be mistaken for the NRA and a lot of rural white males.

Buddy, any shooter knows that you'll probably shoot at an outside range, but we're not exactly trying to impress ourselves with people of the gun, are we?

Correct me if'n I'm wrong, but the site is meant to show that gun owners are from all walks of life and not just the group that washington wants us to fit into. If that's the case then we're pretty much giving her argument creedence.

Jeez, post a valid observation and get accusations...

I shared that initial concern, but it seems to be diversifying nicely.
