X, I have a fixie, and love it. The link to Sheldon Browns site is a good one, as is fixedgeargallery. Not sure if you knew but Sheldon Brown died recently. He was a great man. T.
I used to ride one all the time in Chicago. A lot of folks say they're dangerous, but there is a sort of zen-like cadence that you get when the beast just keep turning...
I liken it to old revolvers - they go around and around and...
I converted an old lugged steel Trek 12 speed to fixed-gear (encouraged by the writings of the late great Sheldon) just a few short months before I purchased my first revolver.
I love both, and expect you will love fixed-gear riding too.
Pick a sane gear -- I like 42x16 which is around 69" -- and keep a front brake and your knees should be fine. Some non-fixie riders enjoy perpetrating myths about who ride fixies and why...sounds a bit familiar actually...
I reserve the right to not publish ignorant ill-informed and filthy comments from vile cretins who have a four letter vocabulary. Further, anonymous comments with strong opinions and personal attacks may be rejected. If you want to voice a strong opinion, at least have the courage to sign your name to it. You don't even have to use your name, make something up so the next person can address your comment without confusion.
Lord help your knees - they're about to get fixed gear nightmares...
ReplyDeleteOK ... that's just too stupidly hardcore for me.
ReplyDeleteBut what do I know ... I ride an electric for my commute.
Check out www.fixedgeargallery.com Great site with people posting pics of their fixed gear rigs!! Good discussion forum too.
