Gator on the Loose

Strange things happen during hurricanes. Early this morning, an alligator made it's way out of the bayous and into the streets. Dogs were barking, cameras were flashing, women and children were screaming. Wildlife and Fisheries sent out a couple of alligator wranglers. Surprisingly, they were not from the local gator farm. Yes, we have an alligator farm nearby.

The wranglers did their best to corral and capture the critter, but the gator was uncooperative. Armed with only courage, a pole noose and duct tape, the wranglers were no match for the wild gator. After it snapped at a leg, the wranglers had enough. Authorization was given, and the animal was shot.

There is frequent speculation on gun forums over what is the "best" caliber for bears, zombies.......or gators. I can say unequivocably that .45 ACP hardball works fine on eight and a half foot gators, assuming the shot placement is good. The problem is getting the critter to hold still, and aligning the sights at night, exactly where the wrangler is telling you to shoot. This is a case where I would agree that a laser sight would be advantageous.

I asked that exact question the other day (though I was also interested in rounds for sharks).

How dare you shoot that harmless gator! Where was I at the time?

Now I will probably never know if .40S&W will work on 8.5 foot gators.
My theory is that the high velocity rounds would work great for piercing the gator's hide.

Great shooting and keep up the good work!

  8. I'm not sure what the political or legal realities of a dead gator in your yard are in LA, but I would hate to see said gator go to waste. I'm thinking a nice pair of boots, maybe a BBQ gun holster and a purse for the misses.

  9. Thanks for blogging through the cane. Glad everyone is OK, gators not included.

I'm assuming YOU shot the gator proving that every cloud has a silver lining.

Glad to see you came through the hurricane and the Geraldo Rivera onslaught OK. Hard to imagine which is worse. Good shootin', too.

  11. *sigh* I miss gator meat. It's hard to find in Montana. When you do find it, they over cook it and you might as well be eating rubber bouncy balls.
