Smith & Wesson has added a Model 442 (SKU: 150544) and a Model 642 (SKU: 103810) J frame to their line-up.
That is not news.
What is news is that they do not have an integrated lock!

Edited to add: If I recall correctly, the lightweight J frames in .357 magnum had the worst incidence of the lock unintentionally locking under recoil.
Rumors are flying, from these being revolvers manufactured with "left over" frames to returned guns from an left over from an international contract.

No lock is progress. But you'd still have to spend money to get the 10+ lbs trigger fixed.
If they actually did that to most of their guns I'd start considering buying new Smiths.

I pickup my brand new lock-free 642 this weekend
I bought a S&W 442 last year. It was new and had the lock. A little drimel work fixed that. There are instructions available on the web.
Truthfully, I was new buying revolvers and really didn't notice until I got home. After I had a couple of hundred rounds through it, I figured it was solid and fixed the lock.
Glad to hear S&W has finally realized they didn't have to bow to the extorionists.
that's why I buy PRE lock S&W's...I get a terrific gun,and they DONT profit from nannystating my firearms choices
S&W stock is a tenth of the price of a year ago. There's also been a shakeup in top management this September.
Me thinks that the only prudent action on their part, it looks like they need to raise some cash and fast.
Ruger is doing much better in this crazy market.
I wish I knew more about what's with today's massive sell off.

My wife has a no-lock 638
I dunno if I'm really so worried about the internal locks in these guns....but they serve no purpose, so we're better off without them
I bought a 642 last spring, carried all summer right front pocket until last week (heavier clothes, easier to conceal bigger gun now). Put about 300 rounds through it, often side by side with my SP101, shooting both .39 sp & .38 sp +p. The SP101 may be indestructable but the 642 has better trigger, lighter to carry and just as accurate or more so than the Ruger (which, loaded to +p instead of .357, is my bedside gun -- love my snubs). Anyway, for my 2 cents, the 642 airweight is a great gun. Especially as, as DuToit puts it, a 7-11 midnight run gun.
