Ryan Frederick's Interrogation
On January 17, 2008 in Cheseapeake, Virginia, a drug raid was conducted based on a confidential informant's information that marijuana was being grown in Ryan Frederick's garage. It is not easy to listen to Ryan Frederick's interrogation immediately after he shot a police officer. It is, however, informative.

Wow! Both the vid and the linked blogs! Eye opener.
Wondering aloud... if one's home was "invaded" a day or two earlier and "nothing was taken" (If I had been growing weed, I doubt I'd tell the Cops that my pot plants had been stolen...all of 'em or half of 'em, thats for sure), if one might take steps to insure one's safety such that should the same someone decide to come back and "invade again and not take the other half of what didn't get taken day before yesterday"... well, whoever came thru the door the next...
I'm not saying Frederick WAS growing weed or anything (altho' I now understand that he did (?) have a plant or two growing reading from Captains' blog)
Really sad for the family of the Officer Shivers.
A lot of lessons for a lot of people to learn here. Sadly, none of it will bring back Officer Shivers. Lives ruined, war on drugs continues, using informants who don't have to testify against you...
Then again, maybe Mr. Frederick is lucky to be alive to testify in court, because that night's events certainly could have turned out 2 shooting victims. All this over a plant that grows in ditches across the planet.
Never, EVER, under ANY circumstances, answer any questions in this situation with ANY answer other than "I will only answer your questions with an attorney present." Do NOT submit to "a few quick questions while we wait." Do NOT think that having an attorney present will hurt your chances in the long run. Do NOT assume you will be more credible if you don't lawyer-up. DO assume that the police will lie to you and try to twist your memory, especially if the goal is to cover their own screw up.
If you're in a self-defense shooting situation, you've already proven to be a fan of the 2nd Amendment. Prove you're a fan of the 6th as well and take advantage of the right to counsel for your defense.
If there is no attorney representing you in the room, for heaven's sake, SHUT UP.
Another reason why the government's failed experiment "The War on Drugs" should be discontinued. If this is all that the collective intelligence of our congress critters could come up with - this "war on drugs" - instead of finding ways to legalize drugs and capitalizing on them, then they're about as intelligent as lettuce. They're pouring good money down the drain when they could be making money, just like they make money on booze and smokes. Billions could be had if they only had an ounce of intelligence.
Any door busting operation or any aggressive police operation should be taped and recorded from the beginning to the end so that there are no 'hesaidshesaid' in the court of law. The technology is readily available, accessible and cheap.
This would make police officers prepared and executing properly or their ass is in the sling.
At the same time police officers should not be allowed to tell civilians to stop taking pictures of their work.
These lies have to stop. It only gives good police officers a bad name.

Very sobering. It is a bad situation on both sides. If I am ever in a situation like that, I'm not saying anything until my lawyer gets there.
There is a REASON that there is a audio recorder in my home that kicks in if any opening is breached or if the motion activated lights outside are energized. My side will be told. That system as well as the video of the entries to my home are on a separate wiring system that has a UPS in case the power is off. They are backed on both mag tape recorders and a hard drive on a hidden computer. My Attorney knows where it all is. Friends and family know to contact him in the event of something bad happening.
