Reasoned Discourse

Click here to see the breakdown of crime on college campuses around the nation. Fistfights indeed. Sometimes it helps to research a bit before a debate.

Kudos to Mike Guzman for not trying to make John Woods look like a fool. Mr. Woods did a fine job of accomplishing that himself.

What a naif Woods is. His last statement that the VT killer could have decided to attack freshmen only if age-eligible CCW was permitted on campus for those is pure moonshine.
That he would suggest that only shows how desperate he is to defend his untenable position in banning evil firearms.

After watching the video it reminds me of the recent Missouri amendment to lower the age requirement to 21 and allow carrying on campuses. http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2009/04/10/missouri-house-passes-ammendment-would-allow-concealed-weapons-college-campuses/

Wow, you're right he did a fine job of making himself look unprepared and uninformed.

I've been hearing more and more about concealed carry on campus and I'm glad it's been picking up momentum and I hope it can continue to do so despite the current political situation.

I don't get why Woods is even on there. Does having his Girlfriend killed in VA make him some kind of expert? I don't think so, but I guess CNN and their collective love to prop up victims of national tragedies for their own agenda.

Oddly they didn't talk about the big crime that happened VERY often on my Campus. Rape!

Now some of the rapes were of the "Date Rape" sort, where a lady would allow a stranger into her room late at night for various *stupid* reasons, but there were still a scary number of ambush rapes that happened late at night as students went about their buisness on campus.

Of course with rape you're almost always talking about a man assaulting a woman, which biologically speaking always means a more powerful and larget attacker seeking out a smaller weaker one.

No better eaualizer than a gun in such scenarios, and with exception to MAYBE Murder, no more hidious or violent a crime.

Of course mention of that would have poked some HUGE holes in his anti-gun argument.

I did some work with a very prestigious West Coast University's Police Dept. awhile back. We helped them get their ERM off the ground and part of the service was scanning their incident reports.

The amount of violence on and around the campus was an eye opener to say the least.

Mr. Guzman handled himself very well, and I was surprised that even one of Ms. Costello's questions came from a pro-gun stance. On the other hand, Mr. Woods was relying on the classically underhanded tactics of the anti-gun crowd.

First, we see one of the most odious tactics of anti-gun activists: Anytime there is a debate or speech to be made, put someone up who has had a friend/relative/loved one killed by "gun violence" (heaven forbid mentioning the person holding the gun).

Next, I'm right there with Weer'd on Mr. Woods', frankly stupid, statement that "there is almost no crime on college campuses". I attend MST, and there was a notice from the school crime bulletin just a few months ago about a rape on campus. It's not the first one I've seen here, and there are notices about vandalism and burglary with rarely a month from one to the next.

Then Mr. Woods goes with another favorite anti tactic: "I talked to a bunch of people and none of them support having guns on campus" (paraphrased). Anecdotal evidence like that is worthless from someone who is opposing guns because they will simply only talk to those who share their views.

Next, Mr. Woods responds to Ms. Costello's surprising question with two outright lies (heavy spin, if you are feeling more generous than me).

Finally, he manages to all but make Guzman's point by claiming that the likelihood of a student being able to fight back would have made the gunman "change his tactics". Apparently the fact that this is the whole purpose of allowing lawful possession of firearms drifted right over Mr. Woods' head.

I'm for the right to carry on campus but I'm not sure alcohol and guns mix very well. Most of the kids in dorms are drinking like banshees.

Campus carry is also making progress in the Texas Ledge, and the Houston Chronicle is predicting there are enough votes in the Texas House for this law to pass. I'm thrilled about that prospect because as a state employee at a major university who has a CHL, this impacts me directly. Under current law, I have to go to work and stay at and come from work disarmed, but can (and do) arm myself everywhere else permitted by law.

And please don't raise the "drunk college student" canard. It's already illegal for a CHL to consume alcohol while carrying, or to enter a "51% Establishment" (where 51% or greater of sales derive from alcohol sales, otherwise known as a "bar") while carrying.

Most students don't drink in their dorm rooms, they drink just off campus then stumble back to the dorm to sleep it off.

With 21 and up, you are mainly talking about upperclassmen, graduate students, and staff and faculty. Y'know, responsible citizens. I actually have no problem with it being 18 and up, at least for women, and preferably for everyone.

I'd love to see High School JROTCs able to offer more firearms training skills than they currently do with just air pistols and air rifles. Not just stationary target practice, but IPDA-style gaming using paintball, etc. Basic Marksmanship used to be a tenant of being a good citizen, and should be so again.

Woods by his own admission in his last comment agrees that concealed carry by the student population would be a deterrent.

I'd like to see how the other side is patting Mr. Woods on the back and how he "tore up" Mr. Guzman in the debate. (That's a Hannity reference :->)

As a college student at UVA, I find it hilarious that Woods said "it's mostly fistfights."

There's a mugging of students or professors here at least once every two weeks, there was recently a hate crime against a gay couple, and I heard the unmistakable sound of gunshots three nights ago. We've had several drug-related shootings as well. And for women, sex crimes are a major concern both from the frat boys and the locals.

So recognize our right to self defense, NOW!
