The Pacific

Band of Brothers is far and away one of my favorite movies, if one could call an HBO mini-series a movie. HBO is seeking to recreate the success of Band of Brothers with a new WWII mini-series based on the Pacific campaign. Note to self: Watch this.......

  2. Xavier, I agree. I completely missed B of B when it was on live, but have immersed myself in the Ambrose book, the OnDemand reiterations on HBO, and some of the other accompanying books on the subject. Every time I see someone that would be in the age group of my grandparents I have to stop and think what they might have seen in the early to mid 1940s.

    Xav,
Last year for Chanukkah my wife got me the Band of Brothers dvd box set. If "Pacific" is half as good as BoB, I know what my Channukkah present for 2010 will be. Thanks for the head's up.

Tom Hanks' involvement is, sadly, enough to keep me away from it until I can maybe pick up a used copy of the miniseries from somewhere.

    But it does look good.

  6. Taken as a whole, Band of Brothers is the best war "movie" ever made. I can't wait for the Pacific.

Many videos unavailable on YouTube after 5pm Sunday Aug. 9 ... although others are still running.

Don't know if there's a DOS attack on the site, some "administrative" problem with some videos using proprietary video clips, or whatever. This slip and all those 'related' clips, however, will not currently play.

Hmmm, a lot of emphasis on the soldiers' home life in those clips. Not that this is a bad thing, but I prefer the treatment they gave Band of Brothers where it was 95% actual combat theater experience.

Here's hoping we see a Johnson LMG and/or some Reisings.

  9. Band of Brothers prompted me to subscribe to HBO for about 11 weeks, and I'll be doing the same to watch The Pacific.

  10. George,

Take a look at some of the scenes which are obviously meant to depict early 1942. The Marines do not have their distinctive camo helmet covers, they are packing water cooled 1917 Brownings rather than air cooled 1919 models, and yes, a Reising is depicted center screen for a moment, as well as the appropriate 1903 Springfields rather than the Garands and carbines depicted in the scenes from later in the war.

  11. Thanks for linking to that! BTW, the Marines landed on Guadalcanal Aug. 7, 1942. They were still fighting a month later when the author of Guadalcanal Diary hopped a B-17 flight to Bougainville. This really brings the landing craft and the coconut groves to life. I know a couple of guys who's dads were there - and one didn't come home. We don't get cable but I'll find a way to see this.
