    OK...no joking here.

I must say that is the most unusual Avtomat Kalashnikov I ever saw.

I note that the photo came from an Associated Press puff piece. I will put money on the fact that that rifle is owned by the Kenner Police Deptartment.

    Why?

No evidence tag. Magazine is in it.

Ill bet reporter asked Detective to "show me one of those powerful AK-47" things. There being none in the Kenner PD evidence storage room ( because they are NOT the 'weapon of choice of bad guys' ) , our hero got an AR patrol rifle out of a parked cruiser.

AR.... AK.... who can tell the difference?

Leave it to the MSM - " Ignorance in service of bias to horrify the ignorant " and " We are the press, we are smarter and more moral than you are".

    Just my thoughts.

  3. Finally, an "AK-47" that belongs on the front row in my gun safe!

I'll buy that for a dollar!

  4. Hmmm... Someone is not doing their fact checking. But then the antis never do.

I'm pretty sure even from that poor quality picture that the guy is holding and M4 style AR-15.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't see one bit of resemblance between an AR-15 and an AK-47 except the fact that the looney left says they both "spray bullets".

    ;-)

GRRR, media crap hits once again.

  8. AP's comment seems a bit prejudicial, don't 'cha think?

  9. That would be quite amusing if it were not so gosh darned sad.

  10. "AK-47-type rifle/gun" *snerk* I guess somebody decided the old lies of "assault" or "automatic" weapons just weren't cutting it anymore. If I weren't against bigger government, I'd suggest a law mandating all reporters take a class on proper identification of firearms and nomenclature thereof before being allowed to handle any stories featuring firearms... Maybe the manufacturer should just sue AP for libel.

Never ceases to amaze me how dumb the press is about guns!

That brand of AK has the worst reliability of any. Tsk, tsk. Let the criminals have 'em.

Is it just me, or does this look like it has a 16" barrel with carbine handguards? If so, it is probably a semi-auto, not even a full auto. AK...AR, they both look scary.

    God bless!

  14. I googled the title of the story. There were a few with different photos, and this one

    http://tinyurl.com/lswb2t

where the photo seems to have been replaced with a blank image.

    The author of the story,

    https://twitter.com/Sedensky

probably didn't shoot the photo, so I doubt you could get anything from him. It would be nice to hear what an authorised journalist such as him feels about the public's right to know when a story gets corrected without an explanation or any notice.

  15. That AK-47 is quite a gun! It becomes whatever those media experts wants it to be!

Of course the reporter that did not have a clue would be offended and proclaim, So what? AK-AR-Air Soft, they are all weapons of war!

I think I need to call that detective, and ask him for the manufacturer and model. Looks like a slick piece. Think he'll be helpful?

  17. Well it is an AK-47 type rifle in that both the AK and the AR-15 are magazine fed, gas-blowback operated, rifles and both are derivatives of the StG44. plus they both have pistol grips and magazines so in the world of news reporting that is a pretty close match.

  18. Nice post Xav. I searched and found the link...

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-03-26-2233996524_x.htm

From the comments at the link...
"The article is about AK-47s but the picture is that of an AR-15, a rifle much more common. Bait and switch?"

  19. Its amazing! I've got a couple just like that one and they break down exactly the way my AR-15 manuals say they should. Had two AK's all this time and didn't know it! Or did I ge stuck with AR's and they actually are totally and exactly interchangeable with AK's?... ;-)

Congrats, jwillis! I cut & pasted the link you provided (thanks), & they've corrected the caption. They still don't say why in the world they show an AR in an article about "AK-47-style" weapons, but at least they correctly identify the rifle.

This is one reason I left Kenner. Even New Orleans is better than this. DickieT

  23. Even I know that's not an AK-47. That's one of them high-powered military-style assault weapons.

  24. All this time I had an AK47 in my gun safe and didn't even know it.

I like the part about "trail of blood at crime scenes across the country". The last big bloody crime scene I read about in the press, more than half a dozen people killed brutally in a trailer park in the South. They were beaten to death. No guns. But of course that fact got little, if any, press.

  26. AK, AR, whatever, they are all evil and need to be banned.

Or so the AP will tell you.

Something else that starts with A comes to mind, but this is a family oriented blog.

  27. Seems like I saw this some time ago, and IIRC, it was mislabeled AR-47 the first go around.

I've also seen cop shows on TV (Crime 360) where the police talk about confiscating an "AK-47" possibly related to a crime as evidence, then proceed to haul out a paratrooper SKS from their vehicle...

    *facepalm*

On the other hand, it's sometimes fun on those shows to guess the caliber of the casings found at crime scenes before the voiceover tells you what it is. Most of the time I get it right, but sometimes the camera angles/closeups can fool you.
