Survive

I remember when this emblematic song hit the airwaves. 1981. I was a much younger man then, and the song reverberated a chord in me. I became a Hank fan, and I appreciated the man as much as his music, even though the image he sold along with his music did little for me.

What I didn't expect was to see myself in the video of the song, released in 2007. 3:42. Wow!

Oh man!!! Don't leave us hangin'. what's the background to all this?!?!?
How did you get this chance? Did you get paid a flat rate? Do you get a nickle each time the video is played? Come on, talk!!!!

I'm interested in your perception or definition of the "image he sold".

When you're a bona fide hunting, fishing rowdy Southern redneck son of Hank Williams who's been a working entertainer since you were a child, not much image is required.

Wait! Is that actually you, or just your unrelated twin from a different mother?

  6. Ron,
The image I'm talking about is the image of a drunken, out of control, skirt chasing, rowdy outlaw. If this were as true as many seem to believe, the man would be locked up or dead.

    Best,

  7. Too cool, Xav... Wife and I got a chance to be in a recording once too. Some friends (and fine musicians) needed some "drunken revelers" for some background on a track. I was in the studio taking pictures for the recording work. We were "volunteered" and the engineer set up the take and we played along.

    It's fun.

I don't see that as the image at all and I'm a Yankee born Midwestern pure conservative. I see it much more as an anthem against Ivory Towered pseudo intellectualism

I had a similar experience, albeit on a smaller scale.

  12. Saw Hank Jr at a USO show Christmas 1985, destroyer and cruiser tied together, floating in the Arabian Sea, 200 miles south of Iran. We were 183 days at sea and there were a dozen Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and Hank, middle of the night, for about 500 of us. The band and equipment barely fit on the fantail of the cruiser. They did over an hour show. Hank was rockin, but I REALLY remember those cheerleaders!
    God Bless the USA.
