2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee

We are watching the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee on television tonight. It is nice to see televised competition that is not reality TV or sports. How do you spell sprachgefuhl? Good show ABC!

We watched last night as well, and I was a little aghast at the fact that almost none of the words in the final rounds were actually English...they were either French, Hebrew, or German. In fact, the final word for the bee was "ursprache".

I was somehow under the impression that an English spelling bee would actually use mostly English words, rather than obscure borrowings from other languages. But it was still fun to watch, and to see the mostly 8th grade children bravely leave the stage while suppressing their tears after doing so well for so long, only to finally lose. And to see the winner holding herself in check as she quavered the letters of her final word, and to watch her face light up as she realized she had won.
