Idiots With Guns #36

Sammi was a real cutie pie wearing her boyfriend's hunting cap and posing like Charlie's Angel with his Glock.

Sammi did not know that placing her finger on the trigger deactivated the pistol's only safety.

Once that safety was deactivated, the only safety left was what Sammi had between her ears.

Uh oh....

The purpose of Idiots with Guns is not to humiliate, but to educate. Over the years we have seen photos of people who, upon picking up a gun, just cannot resist pointing it at something they should not, with their finger on the trigger. This is usually the camera, another person, or themselves. These photos are often difficult to google up, because of the pages they are shown on. If you have archived any of these photos, feel free to send them in to bayouroversATjamDOTrrDOTcom

The Four Rules
1. All firearms are always loaded
2. Never let the muzzle of a firearm point at anything you are not willing to destroy
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it

I think we need to look at the whole picture before we draw any conclusions...

Matt: glocks are by large the most popular beginner/newbie gun. The fact that there are a lot of glock pictures should just indicate their market share. The fact more people own them, means more idiots own them.

That said, I don't own a glock, but almost bought one.

The Glock is the finest COMBAT pistol ever made...hence the reason you hear of so many LEOs, amateurs, and other incompetents shooting themselves with it...just cannot keep their fingers out of the trigger guard? Clean lines, easy draw, nice grip, accurate to a fault, high-cap magazines, no crappy multiple manual and automatic safeties...no wonder pretty girls want to handle em naked! Durable finish, easy to clean. Designed, marketed for, and used by professionals to kill real bad guys in high-threat scenarios like separating terrorists from hostages, it's aura radiates testosterone...and never a KB if loaded with ammo as prescribed. Rail systems make it even better...

...but its not for amateurs. Even pretty ones. Especially dumb ones.

The executive protection guys swear by them.

I was at a dock in Norfolk, waiting for a US Navy destroyer carrying a buddy of mine to return from the Middle East, and I noticed some Secret Service suits standing around in the crowd of kids and family members. The Glock 17's they were all carrying printed pretty well even through thier sports coats.

(Rumsfeld had a son serving on the destroyer and he was there to greet him, hence the bodyguards.)

Animals and children love plastic toys.

I don't have a problem with an experienced and mature shooter choosing a Glock, just as I don't have a problem with them choosing a 1911 as their main defensive arm.

But the vast majority of students that I teach through my charity self defense course have never even seen a gun being fired before, let alone handled one. In my opinion Glocks and the 1911 just aren't suitable for someone with a less than well developed skill set. (i.e. a newbie) That is why I don't own a Glock myself, and why I discourage my students from buying one as their very first gun.

I am an NRA certified firearms instructor and when I teach, I don't even talk about a mechanical safety except to say not to rely on it. I just don't want new shooters thinking that there is any safety that is more important than the one between their ears.

Gun safety is SO simple and yet people violate the rules all the time, sometimes with tragic results.

On a related note, I do think Glocks are fine firearms, however, I don't own one myself just because they're not my favorite in terms of fit for me. I own other pistols instead, my favorite being my East German Makarov. ~Monica

First of all a gun is a hunk of metal, it's not a "Commie". And if you've ever shot a nice Mak, you'd understand why I love mine so much. But I'm not about to get into a pissing match over a pistol.
