Without a doubt, the highest "Cool Factor" I have ever seen in a photo.

I don't think that is infrared. It's heat and gas.

Infrared is invisable to the eye, and any film that would record it would not record the rest of the photo.

An infrared "trigger" was used to open the camera's shutter at the correct time, but it was photographed by strobe light. The glow of the bullet is the normal heating by the expanding gasses of the cartridge. You can see with all that heat why lead bullets sometimes need a gas check when they are reloaded

At least we know this guy doesn't jerk the trigger.

Great pic. I wonder how the fact the bullet hasn't cleared the barrel affects accuracy.

After reading the attached THR thread, though, I feel like some people are not understanding the physics of recoil.

great picture.
I followed the link, but it does't give any info on the setup used to get the shot. any ideas?

also, wonder if his barrel was slightly oily, or there was a little bit of blow-by occuring.

That's interesting, I just took another close look at the photo, and the front of the mushroom of gas is glowing faintly. I can,t see if its the air around it heating due to compression or remaining glow from the now expanding and therefore cooling gas out of the barrel.

As to the glowing bit of gas, thats most probably due to the explosion inside the chamber. In daylight you can not see the muzzle flash, but in dark conditions its very noticeable.

Nice photo... copyrighted one as well!

Be nice if you at least credited it properly with a link if you're not inclined to removed it.
