Mayor Adrian Fenty of Washington DC is pissed.
Today, a federal appeals court
overturned the District of Columbia's handgun ban which had been in place since 1976. The District of Columbia claimed the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias. In a two to one decision, federal judges struck down that unconstutional bullshit. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit also threw out the district's requirement that registered firearms be kept unloaded, disassembled and under trigger lock.
Mayor Adrian Fenty says the decision "flies in the face of laws that have helped decrease gun violence" in the city. He says the city will appeal, and that in the meantime, the law will be enforced.

um...Mr. Mayor, don't you have the highest rate of gun violence in the US?
If the press weren't fools, they would have called him out on that line.
Fenty's got issues.
What part of, "it's unconstitutional" doesn't he understand???
Does this guy lock up felons who have their convictions overturned on appeal as well, while the state runs them through another appeal?
Kyle
So, he's going to enforce a law who's constitutionality is currently questioned? Sounds like guilty until proven innocent to me.
Disassembled AND under trigger lock? WHy would they lock the trigger of something that is not a firearm? It's just hunks of metal until they come together for a higher purpose.
Oldeforce: I'm just a student at this point, but the way I understand it is that the supreme court tends to stay quiet on issues of the Second Amendment. I think that they usually throw those cases out, being a court with discretionary jurisdiction.
SO many things are wrong with this I can't even count them. All save for the court finally getting D.C.'s head out of its rectum, or at least trying....
David Hardy has coverage of the decision on his blog Of Arms and Law
Eugene Volokh has analysis as well.
If DC is enjoying a *decreased* gun violence rate now, I hate to think what it was before. Mercy.

Mayor Adrian Fenty says the decision "flies in the face of laws that have helped decrease gun violence" in the city.
And he even managed to say it with a straight face. Unbelievable.
