Damn Tam!

I started laughing.

Then I realized the list was serious.

Now I'm sad.

I can't believe in this day and age they still tell women to hit someone with their keys.

A few years ago (OK, about 15 years ago) when I was in college they had a women's self defense course. Two of my roommates' girlfriends went. When they came back we had a little fun and basically got past every technique they were taught.

Except for the pepper spray.

That stuff stings like a...

In 1992, (very shortly before I became an armed citizen) I got into a fight with two drunk men outside my apartment. When I started to gain the upper hand, one of them pulled a knife. Due to physical obstacles, running wasn't an option. My keys were all I had and I began to strike my assailant with the keys between my fingers. Several strikes impacted the top of his head as he repeatedly tried to duck my punches, causing the keys to fold over in my hands. After several attempts, I finally got an effective hit to the face which incapacitated the assailant with the knife...but not before he stabbed me in the abdomen. My hands were severely lacerated from the keys and had to be sutured along with my gut.

I have plenty of upper body strength and it took every bit of it to fight the assailant off. The keys eventually worked but I would definitely advise using them only as a last resort, not as the "effective weapon" the ISP website touts it to be. Had I been any weaker, I would definitly have been overpowered and most likely killed. I wish I had been properly armed that day. A gun would've been a much wiser choice. Now I'm armed every day.

Several years ago (late 80's???)my wife did just that. She was knocked down by an older teenage trying to take her purse. She came up with keys between her fingers and gouged the guy. Then planted her foot in the appropriate place. He went down and stayed down. She took off.

Today she carries an HK USP Compact.
