Lance Schilling Dead

Lance Schilling, a former New Orleans police officer indicted for the videotaped beating of Robert Davis on Boubon Street has apprently taken his own life. Schilling was found Sunday in a suburban Metairie home. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the roof of the mouth, Jefferson Parish coroner's office said.

Schilling's attorney, Franz Zibilich, said he was saddened by his client's death. He said he believed the suspected suicide had no connection to the pending trial, which had been set for June 29, 2007. The former officer faced five years behind bars if convicted of second-degree battery.

To my friend and former classmate, RIP old friend. Not saying what happened that night was right, but unfortunately, these two events will forever surround his life. I just hope his family can get through this and his young children realize their father was a good man.

Bah,

Took the cowards way out instead of standing up & answering for what he did.

To my good friend who always seemed haunted by sadness and unable to see through the fog of depression. You will be sorely missed, and your family will have support forever.

He had children and still he offed himself?

So much for "being a good man."

Those kids are ruined for life.

Good for him.

He realized he did wrong. He rectified the situation. He saved the tax payers much cash defending his sorry ass. Or paying out a settlement. Just another dead jackboot.

Screw him. Screw his family.

Those of us who suffer under terrorists like him celebrate!

He was a good man and will be missed. I grew up with him and I know this. If you want to knock his actions as a cop, so be it...but how dare you make such hateful comments and label him as terrorist or coward.

It truly shows your cowardice to pass judgment on a man and a situation that you have no inkling of knowledge about. Maybe you folks should have worked in New Orleans every day for four months defending it from the horrid filth of looters, rapists, and murderers. I agree that there was significant amounts of evil on both sides of the law during that tragic situation but you need to stop putting this man down. Learn the truth before you judge the man.

How do you know commentors here did NOT work in NOLA post Katrina? Xavier, for one, did.

You are the one passing judgement, cheesehead!

Although I have not seen or kept in touch with Lance since high school, I will miss him. The boy I knew was a good person, a little bit dark, but he had a big heart. We used to hang out and watch movies, go to the levee, throw around the baseball...and we even kissed once... that's what I remember. I hope that those who knew him will remember the good times and not dwell or pass judgement on other things.

I can not believe that someone would say, "screw his family". While Lance is now pain free, his family is suffering and will continue to suffer the rest of their lives. Unless you have had someone close to you commit suicide, you have no idea what they are going through. No matter what kind of person Lance was, his family does not deserve to be abused. Being abusive to someone's innocent family is what terrorist do.

I have to admit to having briefly thinking "Well, good for him. At least he did one thing right." It was a flash thought, with no thought to the ramifications.

I'm ashamed of that.

A father committing suicide was not the right thing to do, even if he deserved to be stripped of his badge, and sentenced for his criminal action.

He blew it. For a few seconds of his life, he let it all slip, an dhe gave it all up.

When he realized that his self-identity was taken away, and that he was now judged by society as one of the people he was sworn to put away, he took his life.

How very sad.

Big gorilla with a badge and gun beats up a defenseless 64 yr old man.
Had it not been caught on tape it would have been swept under the carpet. Makes you wonder who else he beat up in the past and got away with it.
Looks like Schilling realized what would happen to him if he got sent to Angola to join Lem Davis and Antoinette Frank.

an old co-worker, as well as a friend, bless your heart and most of all bless your family...they lost a great man, father and spouse. you will forever be sorely missed.

to everyone else, shame on you for the negative criticism. unless you can claim him as a friend, keep your mouth shut because you have no clue what was going on in his life at that time
