The Food Chain
Just because an animal is more evolved, the assumption that it evolves from the food chain is erroneous.
The relations between the law abiding and the criminal are much the same.

He often provided nursing service in areas where law enforcement refused to enter without back-up. Xavier now works in surgery. Xavier has been an avid shooter for over 30 years. He strongly supports the 2nd Amendment, opposes gun control of any sort, and carries a weapon 24 hours a day. Xavier is known on various internet gun forums as XavierBreath. He is married with three children, and is moderated by an apathetic one eyed cat, a goofy Golden Retriever, and a stalwart German Shepherd Dog. One day, he hopes to be deserving of them all.

I've always been a big lover of bugs. I can still remember the first preying mantis I found. I grabbed it to get a better look. Needless to say I quickly let go and ran crying to my mother. I was about five, and the mantis flew off on its beautiful green wings : ]
Xav,
Your comment about the ability of lowlife scum to prey with success on far better developed human beings is very well put, and should be a lesson to all of us.
I have always thought it sad to see a higher organism preyed upon by a lesser. That a cold-blooded insect could kill and devour a mammal is indeed shocking to me, as a mammal. I also find it un-aesthetic when alligators prey on mammals.
On the other hand, perhaps we are misunderestimating the mantis. As W.B. said, they are beautiful. Who knows what kind of conscious experience they actually have? Perhaps their hive-mind is more active than our individual minds (as in the scenario described by Orson Scott Card in "Ender's Game" and its successors). So who is the lesser and who is the greater?

This is what you can get when you'll not fight for your rights... multitool and wheel wrench packed in the trunk of the car being offensive weapons... :)
