Jeff Cooper on Home Defense

February 1990--"Of course the California gun ban is wrong in principle and should be repealed at the first opportunity, but if house defense is your primary purpose, do not overlook the Lupara--a short-barreled double 12-gauge shotgun with exposed hammers. If your object is to defend your hearth and home, you can almost certainly do it better with that than with an Uzi or an M16."

I must agree with the late Colonel. I once saw a demonstration of some Air Force Police practicing with their m-16's. At a range of 200 meters their scores were impressive.

The M/Sgt. in charge took his Remington 870 pump with 5 rounds of #4 buck shot and fired at a shilouette from about 25 meters. There are about 36 pellets of #4 in a 2 3/4 inch shell and about 41 pellets in a 3 inch magnum.

The devistation of the target with the shotgun was so impressive that I have had the same 870 Express 3" loaded with 3+1 as my choice for the past 25 years. Can you imagine, 164 .21 cal pellets heading your way!

I had an old neighbor who swore by the double-barreled, exposed-hammered shotgun for home defense. I demanded to know why.

"Find me a simpler, more guarenteed mechanism for firing. Then find me another system with a built-in redundancy," he said.

Man had a point.

It would be an interesting study, though, to see which was more intimidating to the average goblin:

1. Remington 870, extended tube, 12 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot;

*or*

2. Uzi 9mm, full auto, with suppressor, 32 round stick mag.

I'd wager it'd be about an even break - the riot gun has the advantage of that ginormous barrel poking at the goblin, but the Uzi's got that gangster style the kidz are all abuzz about. ;)

I've always wanted one of the Auto-Ordnance Thompson repros for home defense. 50+1 rounds of .45 ACP goodness, and you're leveling what looks like Al Capone's "Chicago Typewriter" at Mr. Home Invader.

Although I'd wager the goblin would soil the carpet with one look at the 50 round drum... ;)

I agree that a shotgun is superior to an UZI for home defense, but shooting my UZI is just so damn fun!

Cooper expounds a bit on the Lupara idea in "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth (Gunsite Press, 1990)." See page 200.

I must agree with Mr. Cooper on this one.

If you're going to go with a double barrel, or any shotgun for that matter, for home defense, please practice your reload.

2, or even 8 shots is fine for one badguy. But home invasions are not restricted to single badguys. When 4 or 6 guys kick in your front door, can you really afford to miss with 1 of your barrels?

Do we really believe that the mere effort of resisting will turn the badguys away, that if we stop one of the badguys the others will leave us alone?

The lupara is a sawed-off shotgun. Isn't that illegal, in and out of the home?

Jay G. There was a study among felons in prison, can't recall who by or where I read about it, but they asked criminals the gun they didn't want people to pull on them when they broke in and the overwhelming majority said the 12 gauge shotgun cause it could "cut you in two."
not sure how up to date it is but interesting none the less.
