Kinda puts a new spin on that when you hear her correctly ID the perp before she's even SEEN him to 911, and the officers quickly give his last name.

It's truly a good thing the woman was able to borrow a gun that very day. If she'd had to buy one, she never would have survived the waiting period.
Also, it's amazing how long two minutes can last.
Also, he was still choking her AFTER she shot him three times with the PPK.
While I realize that the dispatchers are well-intentioned, a number of things that were said immediately struck me as....I can't think of a good word.
For example, though, take when the woman being attacked (I am presuming an attack begins the moment a person decides to take violent action.) informs the dispatcher that she has a weapon and that she has already determined that she is willing to use it. The dispatcher says something like "we don't want to do anything too rash."
Rash? If you have somebody breaking into your home and you barricade yourself into a locked room and that person forces their way into that room, sees you have a weapon and does not immediately turn tail and run like a scared bunny rabbit, but rather ADVANCES on an obviously armed individual the only RATIONAL course of action at this point is to fire until the "threat has been neutralized." When did defending yourself from an obviously violent, crazed(I presume) sociopath (again, presuming) become "rash?"
The other thing that struck me was that she kept saying "they (the police) are almost there, sit tight" kind of stuff. I am sure that this was intended to be reassuring, and do not fault it being said, however it seems to be to be somehow incomplete. I think the dispatcher should have added "oh, and make sure the safety is off" being that the woman indicated that she had only just armed herself that day.
Zane:
"Don't do anything rash" might have meant "Don't go looking for the guy with that gun in your hand." She didn't tell the caller to put the gun away, for example.
Thanks for posting this Xavier. It helps us understand the reality of home defense so we might be better prepared.
Rash could just mean "please don't shoot a uniformed officer on accident". But I'm not counting on it.

Thank God she came to have a gun that day. Terrifying, these scenarios.
She should have waited for police instead of taking the law into her own hands. She does not have that authority.
Beth - Get your facts straight. She waited as long as she could for the police. He was coming into her second floor bedroom.
It is legal in all states to to use deadly force to preserve your life. She DID have the authority.
She did not take the law into her own hands. The law (police)was not there in time to protect her. She had to do it herself.

In 1988 a man kicked in my front door and I called 911. I armed myself with my .38 Taurus which my father had bought me for protection. When he came up the stairs toward me I pointed the gun at him and screamed. I remember distinctly how his eyes locked onto my gun as he turned and ran. He was later arrested and charged with 3 other rapes in our area. Make no mistake - my gun saved my life. The police responded within 10 minutes but it would have been too late to help me if he had attacked me. You can choose to be a victim or you can choose to protect yourself. I will never be without a weapon again.
