Concealed Bike

One of the oldest tricks of urban biking is to wrap a nice bicycle in tape to obscure the highly desirable machine from potential thieves as it stands chained to a parking meter. Here is one such example years later, of a Raleigh Competition, that was painstakingly wrapped with handlebar tape by the owner.

This technique may have worked time and again to prevent a bike from being stolen, but I don't think the reason was because the thieves could not recognize the prize within. I think it was because they did not want to invest their time making the bike resaleable again.
