Anonymous said...: Several years ago, I was working for a Metropolitan Planning Organization, helping with their transportation plan. I came across a book by a bicycling guy who said having bike lanes at all was about the dumbest thing ever. Can't remember the name or author, but his arguments sounded good to me at the time.; 10:23 AM
Mulliga said...: Yeah, there's some dispute whether bike lanes are actually safer, though in my experience it's really whether the driver of the car is safe and not whether the facility is segregated or not.; 3:33 PM

1) There is grant money to pay for them; and

2) Planners can say in their report they've addressed the needs of a special interest group.

Chuck Pergiel said...: Any bike lane that runs alongside a row of parked cars is stupid. Not only do you have to keep an eye on traffic, you have to watch out for an endless series of booby traps, any one of which could easily put you in the hospital, if it does startle you out into traffic where you get killed dead by what you should have been watching for.; 2:27 PM
