Secretariat

It was going to be a tough case. "Don't worry, we have enough dope to put down Secretariat," I said.

After the case was over, and the patient in recovery, one of my scrubs inquired......."What's a secretariat?"

Could it be? How is it that Secretariat is unknown to the younger generation? Voted one of the top 50 athletes of the twentieth century by ESPN, Secretariat was like no other. Here is the American hero of 1973, the one who gave us inspiration through Watergate, the one who gave us hope after Wounded Knee, and the one who gave us solace during the end game of Vietnam. For those readers too young to remember Secretariat, here he is in all his majesty.

Xavier,

Even more amazing than someone not knowing who Secretariat is, my girlfriend and I were picking up her oldest son today from school, when she began talking to him about becoming a jockey. At 16 he is very athletic, but small at 5'2" and 115 lbs. He had been offered a job to train as a jockey but had balked at it. When she asked him why, he said he was afraid of horses.

I then said "Hey that's no big deal, even John Wayne was afraid of horses, yet he spent a lot of time on them." he then said "Who's John Wayne?" I was too stunned to answer.

Okay, I can see not knowing who Secretariat is. Im 22 and I know who he was, along with a couple other great race horses--but not knowing who JOHN WAYNE IS?!

Travesty. Get thee to True Grit!

Oh, that big red horse. Even though Affirmed and Seattle Slough have won the Triple Crown since then, I have to think that the Big Red Horse (which is how I've always referred to Secretariat) would have been able to beat those two, also. Never looked up comparative times to verify it.

Did you notice how few horses were in that starting field in the video, though? Only about 6. Nowadays there seems to be twice that number running.

What does Secretariat have to do with Wounded Knee?

Looks like the horse was around some 80 years after the Battle. I don't get it...

and yes, I do know who John Wayne is and what Secretariat's relevancy was...

Today is the first time I ever heard of Secretariat. Of course, I was born in '83. I DO know who John Wayne is, though.

Before Ruby Ridge and Waco, there was the Wounded Knee incident.

I'm in my mid-30's and my peers dont even get my references.

They don't know what an 'E-ticket ride' is and they never heard of the Katzenjammer Kids.

Unbelievable.

I call baloney. When he's behind the gate, you can see a cloud from the purge, coming out of the left nostril.

Wow. Not knowing who Secretariat is? Or John Wayne?

Or Bogart? Eleanor Powell?

No wonder civilization is in decline.

Not getting the Secretariat reference...pretty sad, really.
