Rifle?
"How did Newsweek convince Gov. Sarah Palin to pose with a rifle for its cover?Help Elizabeth Snead understand the difference between an over/under shotgun and a rifle here.
Simple. It didn't.
Instead, it used an archive (fancy speak for old) stock photo of her taken back in June 2002 and used it for the cover without her knowledge.
However, to the magazine's credit, it did not try to hide the fact that it's a stock photo, even printing circa 2002 on the cover and again referencing the date in Jon Meacham's editor letters entitled "The Palin Problem."
So that makes it OK.
Right? Or maybe not? What do you think?
Hey, is that even the right way to hold a rifle? Can't you shoot your foot off like that?
Just wondering."

Xavier,
I encouraged her to take a class on guns and shooting if she's going to write about them. I also told her she doesn't have to ever shoot again if she doesn't want to but that in the interest of intellectual honesty she should know what she's taling about.
I doubt it will do her much good however, most Liberals I've know just know instinctively that they are more intelligent than Conservatives...
I'm sure you will just as outraged when Obama and Biden have their pictures used without permission right? Happens all the time to politicians of both stripes but somehow it's oh so unfair it happened to Palin.
I thought you would be too embarrassed by Palin by now to still be talking about her. What a trainwreck she turned out to be. Not that anything was going to save McSame from himself anyway.
I am not embarrased by Sarah Palin.
If any embarrassment should be felt it should be on the part of those who support a candidate for PRESIDENT who has NO executive experience whatsoever, namely "community organizer" Barak Osama.
Are there any break action rifles?
Also, that is the best way to carry a break-action shotgun. It makes sure that any round is disengaged with the firing mechanism and thus makes it safe to the shooter and his/her surroundings.
'nother note, after every skeet in the Olympics, the shooter is required to break the barrel and carry it around like that until it is his/her time to shoot again.
Uh, terry, I don't think Xavier objects to the photo being used in that manner. I think he simply objects to the reporter's ignorance of firearms, and the lame attempt to use that ignorance to slam Palin.
The reporter basically implied that Palin wasn't handling the firearm safely when the picture was taken -- when in fact she was -- and misidentified the type of firearm in the process.
Please don't go to that site and leave a "scathing remark". The writer has already responded to the many comments by saying that gun lovers are one sided and scary. And even possibly all the things that are said about gun lovers could be true.
Sigh, when are we going to be able to catch a break.
Even this "Terry" person is spouting demoncrat crap. Sarah Palin + trainwreck!?!??!?!
By whose estimation? By whose standards? What yardstick are these people using!??!!?
I thought the young lady held up quite well in that debate. I thought she sounded very intelligent and aware. But, I guess when you are dealing with frothy mouthed socialists....then intelligence doesn't count. For them only slogans and undermining and cluelessness are de rigeur.
Steve
It's one of those fancy "shoot-around-the-corner" shotguns.
The Ruger No 1. is a break open rifle. But I doubt a knowledgeable person would mistake it for a shotgun.
David,
Yes, there are 'break-action' rifles but the only ones I've ever heard of are the heavy caliber 'elephant' guns that were designed for Africa (and not much used in the United States)...
What's the big deal? Its a nice picture of a pretty lady with a gun. That's a good thing in my book. The uninformed writer asked a civil question "we" should have provided a civil answer, though only some did. Besides, it could be a rifle (it isn't, but it could be.) Don't drillings (or is it dreiling) lock up like that? The twin barrel elephant guns from Stanley and Livingston days or for the more cultured, remember the weapon Reba and her husband used on the "graboid" that broke into the WRONG rec room? Big chipmunks in Wasilla. ;-)
Thanks for the heads-up Xavier. Here's the comment I left for the snivelling snead:
Dear Ms. Snead,
Although Ms. Palin's feet were perfectly safe when that photo was taken, you have managed to shoot your own foot with it. Congratulations!
I always thought the Ruger #1's were falling blocks.
Regolith thats what the commentary says among other things. So I'm responding to it.
Steve you don't need to put my name in quotes as if it's made up since it is my actual name. Most of what you say is all over the map to the point it doesn't make sense. But anyone who is even remotely aware of the status of the presidential race knows that initially Palin gave McCain a bump in the polls but now is seen as a drag on the ticket. Many prominent Conservatives have said picking Palin has been a disaster for McCain and showed lack of judgement and impulsiveness. Blind and uninformed loyalty is not helpful and using juvenile terms means you cannot be taken seriously.
I do want Obama to win and have little doubt that he will. The people who support Bush and rant about "demoncrats" and "socialists" are helping him win so thanks for that. I will take my chances with gun ownership. Obama does not have some magical power to make guns disappear. This is still a representative democracy.
If you are an NRA member and you actually read their publications you would know that many NRA members are Democrats and many Democrat politicians these days support gun ownership.
It's not like Republicans and Conservative are synonymous these days. Far from it. Bush shows no inclination at all to conservative values.
It looks like she has slammed herself as of today. Abuse of power, broke Alaska state law..
Now it looks like McCain had to defend Obama in his rally today.
Now McCain either continues to smear Obama or takes a 180 and ends up looking “erratic” .
It’s not looking good for the home team.
Terry must be proud of himself that he's taking a chance losing a natural right that the future generations of this country may never know by supporting Obama. It's not just about guns you know, but the perception that any reasonable person under a threat can defend themselves with most effective means at their disposal. In all the countries with harsh bans on firearms the citizens lose the right to defend themselves. That's what we're trying to protect. The notion that we are responsible for ourselves and not the state. The gun represents the ultimate defense for the individual and without it we must turn to state for protection. So there is more to this than a hobby or ownership of property. There's a principal, you know. One that Obama doesn't understand and most democrats do not either.
NEF Handi Raifles, and combo rifle/shotguns like my 22 Magnum and 20 Guage Savage Over and Under come to mind...
Home team? Obama is on the home team. Joe Biden has more class than McCain and palin together.
