Looking at Conquest

It has happened. What Syd so succinctly dubbed the Electoral Apocalypse has occurred. Gun rights advocates lost in the 2008 election. What do we do now? Where do we go from here?

First, accept defeat with dignity and grace. We must do that. An individual or a group is not characterized in how they achieve victory, but rather in how they accept defeat. We were whooped. Our asses are on a silver platter in front of us. But we do not have to eat. We must determine how this happened and not allow it to happen again.

I was not surprised that some of my readers would be bemused at my using a MSNBC widget to keep up with the 2008 Presidential election results. But what better way to assess the situation than observing the opponent? The bias that we have seen in the mainstream media will be exposed as they turn on their anointed superhero of 2008. By 2010, Barack Obama will suffer many more slings and arrows than George W. Bush ever did. The mainstream media is not about providing information. They are about power. The power to get someone elected, and then the power to tear them to shreds. Who the President is matters little to these power mongers. Since they felt the taste of power in the taking down of Richard Nixon, they have systematically tried to dismember every President that has held office, whether they helped him achieve that office or not. Barack Obama will not survive this onslaught. His followers are too fickle.

Barack Obama cannot possibly fulfill all the deluded promises his devoted followers obviously believe he made. He will not buy anyone gasoline, and he will not pay their mortgage. No FEMA cards are going to be available for the economically and socially ignorant. His inability to become the Sugar Daddy to millions of denizens who feel they have been disenfranchised by the Great Right Wing Conspiracy of Hate and Intolerance will cause them to toss him aside with the contempt of a crackhead tossing aside a baggie full of baking soda when the reality of the illusion sets in. Barack Obama will no doubt be remembered as the most ineffectual and perhaps the worst President the United States ever elected. Two years from now, Obama will no longer have the power base he has mobilized. We must preserve our rights until then.

Gun owners were soundly defeated in this election. Two of the most vehement gun rights abolitionists ever to achieve office are now headed for the leadership of this country. We must examine why this happened.

Gun owners have allowed themselves to be divided. We must not allow ourselves to be conquered. We must accept any one who wants to legally own and use a firearm, regardless of race, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. The gun abolitionists can not vote against gun rights when over half their constituents own guns and vote for their own human right to self defense. The gun abolitionists can not vote against gun rights when those rights are inextricably tied to human rights and civil liberties.

There is a reason that gun abolitionists want to preserve hunting. Hunters are easily marginalized. They do not represent a majority of the vote. The same is not true of people who have a need for self preservation and self determination. Those people constitute the entire strata and constituency of the voting public. They cannot be marginalized. We must introduce them to the purpose and true meaning of the second amendment. I know that meaning, most of my readers know that meaning, but did QJ know that meaning? He does now, and it is something he will vote to preserve.

Gun rights are about self protection, not hunting. We must never allow our opponents to paint us as a group of big game hunters again. We are not just hunters. We must stand up and say who we are. We are mothers and fathers. We are Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and Independents. We are black and white, yellow and brown. We are gay, straight, bisexual and asexual. We are Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Agnostic, Atheist, and we live in every state in the Union. Our education ranges from doctorates from Harvard and Stanford to GEDs achieved while fighting in the streets of Baghdad. A dusty pick-up truck with a gun rack inside the rear window is not necessary to be one of us. We have one common goal. That goal is the preservation of our right to self defense. That right, that need, is universal. We must never allow ourselves to be portrayed as ignorant rednecks with tobacco juice drooling down our unshaven chins again.

So I challenge each gun owner reading this. Take an Obama supporter to the range. Teach them to shoot. Teach them about the second amendment. Take away the political left's power to destroy our rights through the ambivalence of others. If we fail, our enslavement is inevitable.

Your comments on the media now going after Obama make sense only if you see the media as an independent entity. But what if the media becomes an arm of the State? Personally, I believe that is beginning to happen, and will continue to become more so. Then there will be no more attacks on Obama or the Democrats ever again.

well said and well meant, sir.

however, it must be remembered and said that much of the support for the empty vessel that is the o regime is for that very reason...it is a glass waiting to be filled by whatever and whoever can gain access.

and that msm will turn against him, while true as they must generate conflict and headlines to survive, is but one of his erstwhile support groups.

some of the others, whether foreign interests or internal, will push their agenda through him for the very reasons you state; to accelerate what they see and hope to be the very demise of our country and our way of life...these will continue their subterfuge and support in spite of...or rather because of...his failures to deliver on empty promises, and the strife that is sure to follow.

it is these groups in the background of ceasar's reign, not ceasar himself, that are our enemies...and yes, the well-armed militia of individual free Americans are the last (and perhaps only) line of defense against them.

word verification: grati...yes, sir, thank you...for your insight and broadminded support and encouragement of others to support the one aspect of freedom that can...and will...defend the others.

Xavier,

First my deep condolences. Second it wasn't gun owners that were defeated Tuesday, it was Republicans.

From 2001 - 2006 Republicans controlled the Congress, the White House and for the most part had a cooperative Supreme Court.

From 2001 - 2006 Duke Cunningham and Ted Stevens made alot of money in bribes, gifts and kickbacks. Mark Foley was chasing young men all around DC trying to get in their pants and Trent Lott was lamenting the good old days of Jim Crow.

We got bogged down in Iraq and for too long President Bush did nothing to remedy the situation. Thank God he eventually cut Rumsfeld loose and let General Petraeus run with the ball.

By early 2008 it was becoming clear that things were turning around in Iraq but by then it was too late, Americans were worried about losing their jobs and even their homes.

This election has never been about guns or even any kind of ideology it's been about change and revenge.

Blame the media, blame ACORN blame whoever you want but please, save a big part of the blame for the Republican party itself.

Xavier,

Mobilization of gun owners is MUCH better now than it was in '94. Thanks in no small part to hard working bloggers like yourself.

If an AWB rears it's ugly head, we'll be ready for it.

(You didn't need to post an 'IDIOT WITH A GUN' to make your point - a rare lack of judgement on your point.)

I hope what you post works Xavier, but I believe the Dems will have a go at us, including trying to ban concealed carry... We are down, but not out, as you say. Without a consistant voice (NRA?) we are in trouble. Stretch Pelosi as much as said that yesterday when talking about open vs. closed goverence.

Man, that was very nice, Xavier. I may have to forward that around to some of my gun rights favoring friends and some of the antis, too. Your site continues to impress me -- and I have been a loyal visitor since soon after you started it up. -- Callahan

I'll go further. After taking an Obama supporter to the range, strongly encourage that Obama supporter to write to the next president:

"I supported you, but I do not and will not support any attempt to deprive any American of any Constitutional right."

With respect to your closing challenge, this is why I love the Pink Pistols.

They're an easy way to introduce people into shooting because there's no machismo and it's by nature a very open minded and accepting group. I worked on a local Democratic campaign the last five months and in two weeks a majority of our staff will be joining the local Pink Pistol chapter for their monthly shoot.

The Arizona state legislature swung hard Republican this year - maybe we'll be able to get concealed carry in restaurants and college campuses passed.

IF they get the fairness doctrine passed, maybe.

I still think that's key to the MSM. Their current business model is failing and shutting down the opposition would help them immensely.

I'll have to agree with some of the other posters here in that I believe the media has invested entirely too much time and money in Obama to turn on him after the election. As evidence, witness the change in coverage post-election. Almost all of the coverage now is on how much other countries "admire us" rather than on how much they dislike us, as was brought up so many times during the campaigns. Note also the focus on the challenges before the country, which looks an awful lot like a push to lower expectations after over-selling their candidate.

Read this from an AP article today - - President-elect Obama, a former smoker struggling to avoid relapse, is a sponsor of legislation giving the FDA authority to control, but not ban, tobacco and nicotine.
Reading that, I have to wonder at the reason - - STRUGGLING TO AVOID RELAPSE -- for "control" of an an industry.
And even should the media turn on Obama where they have differences of opinion, common things, such as Gun Control will easily be a rallying point where the control of Senate & House will allow some harsh things -
I expect attacks on ownership itself, conceal carry, the A/R and such weapons of mass destruction, extended background checks, limits on the number of purchases, the closing of the "hole in the gun show sales", increased taxes on purchases extending over to ammunition and scopes and holsters and anything remotely tied to guns.
But I do plan on taking some idealistic younger adults out shooting.
I just hope that any soon to be laws & economic issues are overshadowed by the enjoyment.

No offense but you are deluding yourself. " His Transcendence" will not suffer the same scrutiny that George the second endured nor even that of Bill "the molester " Clinton. Like a lot of people trying to get lemonade from the lemons of life, you are attempting to " see the upside".
The fact that all of the old guard media went so obviously completely in the tank for this socialist crud, shows that they will cover up and protect him as much as possible.
Once the fairness doctrine is established and the " alternate media" muzzled there will be no need for them to produce acurate information.
So get ready for a full scale onslaught against us the gun owners.

I liked what you said, but my question to you is what do you tell someone that is a diehard Obama supporter AND ex military that can shoot, but just has that belief that only certin people should be allowed to have guns and the government should decide that. I have explained that it's not their job to decide that since we control them and they do not give us are rights, they are supposed to preserve them. I get the "deer in the head lights" stare.

I am a professional female who supports and voted for Obama, and has a handgun carry permit and I take my weapon everywhere I go. And that includes the range on a monthly basis. I don't hunt and I strongly oppose people that do. Weapons are for protection, not the taking of innocent life, be it human or animal (unless it is threatening to your survival). So if you don't want to be portrayed as having dip run down your redneck chin, don't act/talk close minded....

I think GW Bush holds that honor right now.

Any president elected right now will be vilified in the years to come. There's a big mess to clean up and it'll take years to fix. Any president (Obama or McCain) would have been the sacrificial lamb.

No rational person is expecting the the President-Elect to come in a wave a magic wand.

Take an Obama supporter to the range. Teach them to shoot.

Already done it. All the gun owners I know voted democratic, and could be described as liberal.

You are right. Gun owners are democrats, republicans, independents, gay, straight, male, female, black, white, liberal, conservative, moderate, etc.

My wife is a fiercely liberal feminist, who also enjoys shooting. I'm a independent. We've both been turned off by the GOP's culture war. we've no tolerance for creationist snake handlers.

The GOP tent has gotten pretty small. The Democratic tent has gotten bigger, with more moderates and gun owners flocking over there because of the right wing culture warriors.

I am not so sure that the Main Stream Media, like MSLSD (i.e., MSNBC) will turn on President-elect Obama. They seem to be caught up in what Sean Hannity calls "Obama-mania". For example: The Historian who appeared on the Don Imus show simply gushed about Obama's IQ, but when pressed admitted that he did not know Obama's actual IQ (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081110175826AAqXj5L). And let us not forget Chris Matthews tingling leg thrill.

In addition, last weekend Obama cleaned-out the Agenda on change.gov web site to the point where his once specific plan is nebulous and generic (http://change.gov/agenda/). So there are now no specifics to which one can hold Obama accountable.

I guess that only time will tell.
