Ugly Gun Sunday

A Kalashnikov confiscated from Somali pirates on March 3, 2009. Rusty, but odds are it still runs.

How much do you want to bet somebody will claim it was bought by the Pirates at a US Gun Show?

X, generally you do rollout a butt ugly gun for Sunday—but this thing isn’t ugly, it’s just used-up.

In a way, I can see where the Somali pirates are coming from. If my Avtomat rusted like that, I would also doubtless say "Arrrrrgh!"

I'm trying to figure the safest place to stand if someone were to attempt to fire that. Front, back or sides seem to all be in the danger zone. Maybe next county.

I'd vote against it operating.

At least the bayonet is nice and shiny.

No problem; just needs some paint and a roll of duct tape...

I agree with Xavier, the AK is designed to be used by third world, conscripts. I believe it would work.

Looks like the firearms equivalent of those beater Toyota trucks that all those Somali warlords cart their hoodlums around in. Looks like crap, but parts are plentiful and they will run well beyond a million miles with an occasional strip of duct tape.

I bet it runs more reliably than half the shiny ARs owned by the internet community...

I like guns that other people think are over-decorated, as long as the decorations don't impede function (like blue flames on the slide) or aid function (like safety colors might, depending on how the gun was intended to be used).

I think a bit of flash shows pride of ownership, and that's a good thing. It can demonstrate and add to the owner's predisposition to keep their weapon and their skills in good shape.

Looking at the amount of pride of ownership and tender loving care that has gone into this Kalashnikov, I have to say: that's an ugly gun.

Thus we see the constant care the Somali pirates exercise in not giving their captives tetanus. Good job on the nice, shiny bayonet!

At least this one still has the selector. I've seen one AK without the selector AND the front sights... Well if you're just going to shoot it from the hip in full auto the sights are just extra weight...

That's not ugly, it's got "character."

Oil, wax or grease is pretty cheap.

I guess cosmetics are not on the top of modern-day pirates lists.
