More Gun Confiscations Planned in New Orleans!
They say the difference between ignorant and stupid, is stupid can't be fixed. The New Orleans Police Commissioner could have claimed simple ignorance when he declared "No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons," after hurricane Katrina. After all, he was not required to read the US Constitution prior to swearing to uphold it (although a more intelligent man probably would have.) Yes, when the NRA and the SAF dragged Warren Riley's cohorts into court over widespread gun confiscation after hurricane Katrina, Riley could have simply feigned ignorance and slipped through the cracks. But..........
In an interview with WWL Radio on June 2, 2006, Riley stated his officers would again seize guns from law abiding citizens if another storm was to hit New Orleans. "During a circumstance like that, we cannot allow people to walk the street carrying guns. As law enforcement officers we will confiscate the weapon if a person is walking down the street and they may be arrested," Riley declared on the air.
Since hurricane Katrina the Louisiana legislature has passed new legislation, making firearms confiscation from law abiding citizens during times of civil disorder a crime. The Chief of the New Orleans Police department is now stating that should another hurricane strike New Orleans it is his intent to commit criminal acts. He intends to forcibly take firearms from law abiding citizens again, knowing full well that his acts are against the law. Mr. Riley is no better than the despicable looters lying in wait waiting for the next disaster to strike to help mask their crimes.
Here's hoping Mr. Riley is as good as his word. Here's hoping he becomes the first looter behind bars in the upcoming hurricane season. You might not be able to fix stupid but you can damned sure lock it away so you don't have to put up with it anymore. Go ahead Warren. Make our day.

Thanks for the update.
I'm looking at the history of the bill now. It looks like the House passed it on 04/24. It was sent to the Senate, where it was amended and passed on 05/22. It went back to the House, who concurred with the Senate amendments and passed it again on 05/30. Signed by the Speaker on 5/31, signed by the President of the Senate on 6/01. It goes to the Governor for signature, veto, or whatever.
How I feel about that statement somewhat depends on laws in N.O. Is open carry of any firearm legal in the city? If not then openly carrying, even during disaster situations (as opposed to TEOTWAWKI), is not a lawful act (regardless of how right or wrong it is).
He was still an idiot for making that statement.
Obviously, the NOPD are the only ones professional enough to be armed during a time of emergency. The ones that chose to stay and do thier job, that is. Oh, and the ones who chose not to loot while on duty.
Are they gonna disarm the Blackwater Guards brought in? If a police officer obeys an illegal order like that from the Chief, can a citizen being forcibly disarmed shoot back in justifiable self-defense?
Since the police trying to confiscate firearms would clearly be breaking the law, people would be entitled to use deadly force to prevent their weapons from being stolen - as much by the police as any other criminal.
Does that jackass really want his officers to be a)criminals and b) legal targets?
He should be fired, and now. Clearly he's too stupid even for a civil service job in NO.
Incredible!
