"I have to ask, why the bias against pistol grip only shotguns? For a home defense only weapon, an 18" barrel with a pistol grip and a laser sight seems like the perfect shotgun setup."It's a personal thing. I prefer to aim my guns by looking down a barrel at sights or beads. I'm more accurate that way. A defensive weapon is only useful if it can stop a threat. If you can't hit what you need to, the threat is not stopped. In a home defense situation, you definitely want to hit what you intend to. You do not want to kill family members in the process with stray shots.
If you want a pistol grip only shotgun with a laser sight, buy one. If you can consistently hit what you want with it at the distance you need to, then keep it. If you can't effectively and reliably stop a threat with it, then look at the gun objectively and decide whether you want something that you can use more effectively.
I couldn't hit squat consistently with a pistol grip shotgun fired from the hip. They are great fun though.
My first time with a pistol grip only Mossberg 12 gauge was interesting. The target was a spray paint dot on a sheet of old paneling at about 20 feet.
ReplyDeleteThe first shot obliterated the paint mark and left a 3-4" ragged hole in the paneling from the #6 bird shot I was using. The second shot widened the hole by a few splinters... hitting in the same spot.
I fired from a higher stance, looking over the barrel but not at it.
I hit what I was aiming at, but it wasn't an enjoyable or practical weapon to shoot , so the stock went back on.
The key is to shoot the damn thing. Most people find like Car that even when it works, it's just not as cool as it looks.
ReplyDeleteSo many things are like that!
Pistol grips are for gripping...
ReplyDelete...wait for it...
pistols. With all the inaccuracy and recoil issues that entails.
No thank you, for a defense longgun I will take a stock, perhaps even a collapsing stock, every time.
Pistol grip shotguns are easy to use if you know how. If you don't know how they are difficult like anything else.
ReplyDeleteA shotgun should have a stock, not a pistol-grip, unless its a pistol-grip stock ala Benelli. There isn't anything that you can do with a pistol-grip shotgun that you can't do with a regular stocked shotgun.
ReplyDeleteI dare you to be as accurate with a pistol-grip shotgun as you would be with one with a stock. Ain't happenin.
Isn't the length of the furniture on the aft end included in the required overall length of the weapon per federal law? don't you end up with a longer barrel than 18" that way?
ReplyDeleteR, the barrel, receiver and grip make up the OAL. The grips are designed to provide for the minimum OAL with an 18.5 inch barrel.
ReplyDeleteA long arm without a stock is just a confused pistol to me.
ReplyDeleteThe trick to pistol grip shotguns is holding it eye level about a foot or so from your face. If your a grown man and need to shoot one from the hip bc you can't handle the recoil, you probably don't need one with a stock either. I have a mossy 500 rolling thunder and can shoot it one handed at eye level
