Spiders as Payment


"Dear Jane,
I do not have any money, so I am sending you this drawing I did of a spider instead."

Actually, Henri Matisse, in his later years, was known to sketch small drawings on the checks he remitted as payments for rent or goods. They were seldom cashed, as the Matisse drawing was more valuable than the check. Of course. Matisse was an artist........

Pablo Picasso was known to sometimes pay for a meal at a restaurant by signing the tablecloth.

Not sure Matisse was the 1st to do such, but he certainly wasn't the last.
Other artists have done the same. In fact, for a period, there was an artist who drew likenesses of US currency as his means of paying. At that time, his drawings were worth more than the items he'd purchase.
With the way the economy is heading, and the mis-steps of Paulson thus far with the monies of our pockets, we may find it leading to a stronger "barter" econonmy in this country.
