Focus Screen Cleaning

Although it is listed as a non-removble focus screen, the focus screen on the Nikon D200 is removed in the same fashion. I followed this procedure when I replaced it with a Katz Eye screen.

One tidbit that I have not blogged on is that I purchased a back-up Nikon D200 from Adorama. The camera was approximately $600 used, and yes, I like it that much. I installed a Katz Eye screen in it as well. The second installation went much smoother. Perhaps knowing what one is doing trumps any set of directions..........

Giotto Rocket Blower

I'm a confirmed skeptic about many things. When I needed to get the dust off my DSLR sensor, I followed the instructions in this video, and had fairly decent results. I still had a couple of specks on my camera's sensor, so I gave it another go, and the results were the same.

I had made a substitution for the recommended blower though. I was using a bulb off a blood pressure cuff as a homemade air blaster. I decided the price of a Giotto Rocket Blower ($12.95) might be a risk worth taking. I placed one on order. It arrived today.

This rubber rocket ship moves more air than a Rush Limbaugh at a burrito festival. One pump of the bulb is enough to send my daughter's hair flying. One quick squeeze is enough to make Ilsa stop in her tracks and slick her ears back. A few puffs of this thing and my camera's sensor was spotless. I suppose the Giotto Rocket Blower could be used for a lot of things, but for this purpose it is the cat's meow.

Nikon Photomic Tn Batteries

The batteries intended for the Nikon Photomic Tn were PX625 mercury cells. They now no longer available because of the hazardous materials they contain. The best current substitute power cell is a 625A alkaline.

The 625A alkaline cells are available at Wal Mart and other discount stores. You may find that your meter readings are not spot on with the alkaline batteries, but it will be close enough to make sure your meter is working and to shoot some photos on print film. Of course, you can always ignore the meter and use the Sunny 16 Rule.
