Christmas Gun Instruction

Yesterday, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office of Rapides Parish Louisiana offered a free course in basic firearms safety to anyone who received a firearm for Christmas. Chester “Bud” Carpenter, hunter education youth coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office, said the course was something he had long considered. "I thought it would be a good program. It’s just the basics, how to load, how to unload it and how to store it safely in the home," he said. The course also included supervised range time.

Only 20 people had shown up by 9:30AM, but people continued to filter in throughout the day. They were not turned away. More here.

Sometimes I'm just damned proud of Louisiana. I think I will initiate a similar program at the range I frequent.

Act No. 684 Becomes Law

Senate Bill 51 was signed into law by Loisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and will take effect today, Friday, August 15, 2008.

Now known as Act No. 684, the law reaffirms the rights of law abiding Louisiana citizens to transport and store lawfully possessed firearms in locked, privately owned motor vehicles, including while traversing or parking in any parking lot, parking garage or other parking area. Property owners, tenants, public or private employers, and businesses may not prohibit the transportation or storage of firearms in motor vehicles in their parking lots or garages if those areas are accessible to the general public.

For those who are unfamiliar with the South, there is an old expression....."It ain't the heat, it's the humidity." How humid does it get? Ilsa can no longer see through the condensate on the windows created by the air conditioning.

Sometimes I'm just Proud of Louisiana!

Registration is under way for children ages 8 to 12 to participate in the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office "First Gun Course." The four hour class will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 17 and again on Jan. 7. Designed for children only, the course provides basic instruction for those who may never have fired a gun, but want to be able to use one safely. It's also recommended for children who will receive a new BB gun or hunting rifle for Christmas.

Children are welcome to attend the course with BB guns, pellet guns, .22 rifles, and small caliber shotguns. No high-powered rifles will be allowed. Only BB's and .22 ammunition will be supplied by the training academy. Through generous donations by local citizens, Wal-Mart, and local wholesalers, children without a gun can use one supplied at the academy. All children will shoot both fixed targets and skeet. The course is free, but registration is required. Space is limited, and Caddo Parish residents will be given preference. An adult must remain with the child throughout the course. Classes will be held at the Sheriff's Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy, located at 15639 Highway One South.
