Kudos to Mike Guzman for not trying to make John Woods look like a fool. Mr. Woods did a fine job of accomplishing that himself.

Scared and Uncomfortable

John Wahlberg was at work one night when he received a message that the authorities "requested his presence". Being a good citizen, Wahlberg went to the police station. Inside, he was questioned and officers began to read a list firearms that were registered under his name, wanting to know where he kept them.

Sound like fiction? It happened at Central Connecticut State University. Wahlberg had unfortunately given a presentation on school violence as an assignment in a communications class. He talked about the Virginia Tech killings of 2007, and went on to say that had concealed carry been allowed on the Virginia Tech campus, Seung-Hui Cho might have been stopped before he killed thirty-two people.

"I was a bit nervous when I walked into the police station," Wahlberg said, "but I felt a general sense of disbelief once the officer actually began to list the firearms registered in my name. I was never worried however, because as a law abiding gun owner, I have a thorough understanding of state gun laws as well as unwavering safety practices."

Wahlberg's instructor, Paula Anderson, reported Wahlberg's presentation to campus police claiming it caused a "scared and uncomfortable" atmosphere in the classroom. So much for the free exchange of ideas, or even reasonable discourse in academia. "If you can’t talk about the Second Amendment, what happened to the First Amendment?" wondered Sara Adler, president of the Riflery and Marksmanship club at CCSU.

A Fighting Chance

The 21 year old University of Wisconsin-Madison coed wanted to be a physician. She had altruistic goals of healing the sick and infirm, not of living a country club lifestyle. She was living with her fiance'. They had plans to marry in Hawaii. When he arrived at home, on April 2, 2008, he found her dead.

Brittany Zimmerman had been beaten and stabbed multiple times in her chest. She was finally strangled to death as she desperately clung to life. Her door showed signs of forced entry. Her cell phone was shattered. Amazingly, Brittany had notified a sheriff's 911 dispatcher of the vicious attack. The 911 tape revealed screams, gasps and the sounds of a struggle, according to court documents. Her call for help was ignored because "the dispatcher did not hear any sounds that would signal an emergency." After her murder, a Marquette Tribune headline had the audacity to declare that the cause of Brittany Zimmerman's death was still unknown. Her killer is still at large.

Here's a snippet of reality for those who still believe the cause of this young woman's death is "unknown." She was murdered. She bled out while some predatory animal in human form squeezed the last breath out of her collapsing, blood filled lungs. She died a horrible, unjust and unnecessary death. Police failed to respond in a timely fashion. It took them 48 minutes to arrive at her home to "investigate" Brittany Zimmerman's death, only after her husband-to-be found her dead body.

I have yet another reality snippet. The failure of the police to respond in a timely fashion is irrelevant. The lethal attack was already in progress when they were notified. Unless officers were already on patrol on her street, a 911 call was but a futile notification that a homicide would soon be investigated. The only way that Brittany Zimmerman could have been saved at that point was by having the ability to effectively fight off an attacking predator. It is evident that she did not have the physical strength or know how to do so. Thus, she needed a tool. She needed a gun.

A gun is not a magic talisman against evil. A gun is not some mystical device that saves lives any more than it is an evil device that takes lives. A gun is an inanimate object. A tool with which we can protect ourselves. A life preserver. A gun might not have saved Brittany Zimmerman on April 2, but with the proper training and effective ammunition, it would have given her a fighting chance. If only she had a gun.

HB 199 Shelved

Louisiana HB 199, the legislation to allow the carry concealed of weapons by permit holders on Louisiana's college campuses was tucked away Monday when the author of the bill decided not to push it to a vote. Representative Ernest Wooton, R-Belle Chasse, said he had the support of 45 House members but could not get the 53 votes required to pass a bill in the House. "Put the bill on the calendar until next year," Wooton asked House Clerk Butch Speer, signaling that the issue is dead for the session. Wooton pledged to re-introduce it next year.

"This bill is not about students with guns on campus," Wooton stated. "This bill is about the right to carry a gun concealed." Damn right Rep. Wooten.

A letter from LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman, signed by all LSU coaches, claimed that it would be difficult to convince parents to allow their children to attend LSU if they knew that guns would be allowed on campus. These coaches fail to understand that parents who carry do not want their children to attend a university where they can not visit them unless unarmed. They fail to realize that their atheletes with drunken criminal backgrounds would not qualify to legally carry anyway. Further, they fail to realize that a paper prohibition to the legal carry of concealed weapons on college campuses does not stop the criminal with ill intent. It's not about college enrollment fellows. It's about the ability of law abiding people to protect themselves from criminals. When my daughter graduated from LSU this Spring, I thanked God that she did not have to walk through her day disarmed any longer.

Wooton stated that although some LSU officials opposed the idea, "the student Senate voted for my bill. It was vetoed by the president of the student body. I'm going to disappoint a lot of people. I guarantee you, we will be back."

Empty Holsters

Louisiana House Bill 199 Approved

The Louisiana House of Representatives Criminal Justice Committee approved a gun bill with an 11 to 3 vote on May 1, 2008. House Bill 199, introduced by Rep. Ernest Wooton, of Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Charles parishes, would authorize CHL holders to carry concealed handguns on campuses of higher education. Representatives Roy Burrell, Frank Howard and Barbara Norton voted against Louisiana citizens having the right to effective self defense on college campuses. HB 199 applies to everyone; faculty, staff and visitors, in addition to students.

"This is not about students. It's about concealed handgun holders on college campuses," Representative Wooton said, "Most of this discomfort is caused when you don't know anything about handguns or weapons. This permit law requires that you be totally familiar with your weapon, have the ability to use your weapon and qualify with the weapon."

"As a female who lives alone, I am forced to recognize that if it came down to it in a physical altercation between myself and a male, I'm toast," said Elizabeth Cook, member of the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus LSU chapter and Paul M. Hebert Law Center student, "I can't protect myself. Give me the opportunity to protect myself."

Hopefully, thousands of coeds will soon have that basic human right. House Bill 199 now goes to the Louisiana House of Representatives for debate.
