Victory Box on ebay

A impossible to find accessory, this is a factory cardboard box which was used to ship the Smith & Wesson Victory revolver during WW2. The box itself is made from corrugated cardboard and is in mint condition. It bears the U.S. Military Ordnance crossed-cannon stamp along with the inspectors initials 'GHD' for Guy H. Drewry, Brig. General, Springfield Ordnance District, (June 17, 1942 - July 15, 1945). The box is opened at one end and has the original paper used to pack the gun, along with a wrapped factory cleaning rod. Vintage photos 6 and 7 are from the book "U.S. Handguns of World War II", by Charles W. Pate, and show a Victory revolver lying in its open shipping box along with another photo of the gun itself. Please note that this is an empty shipping box being offered and contains only the wrapped cleaning rod and paper previously mentioned. In my many years of collecting, I have never seen another S&W Victory shipping box.

Frankly, I've never seen another Victory box either, so how can I say this is the real deal? Even if it is, will it improve a $300-$400 to a gun worth twice that? I doubt it.

I have been an eBay member for over 10 years, having joined prior to April of 2007, long before the current crop of eBay Executives had even heard of eBay. At that time it was an open, free market but from the very beginning there were rules that prohibited selling illegal items. Everybody got along, and it was FUN to meet new people and buy from them or sell to them. Heck, more than once I have traveled to the eBay campus and participated in usability studies, trying to help eBay make their site better.

Then, suddenly, it became somehow wrong to sell firearms. The category was deleted and any auctions that cropped up in other categories were killed. Suddenly it became “illegal” on eBay to sell perfectly legal items in a perfectly legal manner, i.e. shipping to federally licensed firearms dealers for subsequent transfer. At about the same time as firearms were being banned the plethora of “patent medicines” started cropping up, everything from ointments that claimed to enlarge certain body parts to pills to make the enlargement last longer. Herbal remedies for everything, lack of sleep, loss of energy, you name it. All fraudulent, of course, but still being sold today.

I believe this was the first of many steps down the path of social engineering that eBay has chosen. Today they justify their recent clampdown with, “We have a Trust and Safety team which consists of more than 2,000 experts in online security and safety who are located around the globe.” But back then the Executive Team were at least honest and everyone knew that they were opposed to private ownership of firearms. Implying that their “online security” people have ANY firearms knowledge is like saying that a programmer knows how to run a business.

Further, their experts from “around the globe” are not relevant to America. I don’t really care what someone in Paris, or Lisbon, or London, Tokyo, or Cairo thinks about AMERICAN free enterprise. Just as I don’t care if they ban pork rinds in Saudi Arabia, eBay executives have no business listening to “global” input as it affects the US market.

Below is an exact quotation from the letter sent to me:

“We value an open and transparent marketplace; if items are legal to buy
and sell in an unrestricted manner we allow them on our site. However,
there are some items that while legal, may not be safe for our
marketplace. In these instances, our applicable policies go beyond the
law to ensure that our marketplace is safe.”

I would like to point out that the first and last sentence are obviously contradictory. You cannot value something, truly value it, and then not honor your own values. What this means is that eBay does NOT place any significant value on an open marketplace, they are simply giving it lip service.

I wonder what eBay does value. For example, do they value the educational fund that one store owner was building for his daughter by selling LEGAL parts? Do they care that they are taking that education from her?

Do they understand that one of the nations finest gunsmiths spent years designing and perfecting a firing pin that will SAVE LIVES by making rifles safer to fire and that he no longer has a “mass market” to sell his product? It is entirely likely that more people will die from “slam fires” that could have been prevented by the use of this improved firing pin. Does eBay care that because of their policy people might actually die?

I don’t know the answers to those questions, and quite honestly I wouldn’t believe any answer provided to me by an eBay executive.

So, here’s the “auction”. I would ask that there be only one bid, to make this a valid auction, and that bid be for one penny. ALL graphics are free to all. Please feel free to copy them and use them in your store as you shut down your operations. Use them in your final auctions, or wherever you would like.

Also, I would suggest that the many sellers currently selling firearms optics get ready to be shut down at any time as the scopes you sell MIGHT be used to convert a “hunting rifle” into a “sniper rifle.” At the drop of a hat a “sniper rifle” could be added to the currently forbidden “assault rifle” category. (Neither the govt. nor eBay can define what either of those rifles are so expect the worst.)

Hello everyone…In mid-August, we will be updating our Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy to place more restrictions around gun-related items. Once these changes take effect, we will prohibit listings of any firearm part that is required for the firing of a gun.

This includes items like bullet tips, brass casings and shells, barrels, slides, cylinders, magazines, firing pins, trigger assemblies, etc. Please read the Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy for more details on our current policy.
As you may know, eBay does not allow the listing of any items which are regulated by individual states or the federal government; however, there are still a large number of firearm-related parts that are legal and are widely available in retail stores. These items have also historically been allowed on eBay.

After learning that some items purchased on eBay may have been used in the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April 2007, we felt that revisiting our policies was not only necessary, but the right thing to do. After much consideration, the Trust & Safety policy team – along with our executive leaders at eBay Inc. – have made the decision to further restrict more of these items than federal and state regulations require.

Roper Grips on Ebay!

Expect these to escalate. First, they are N frame grips. Next they are Ropers. Finally, they are damned nice Ropers.

Roper grips, associated with Walter Roper, a marksman from the time of Skeeter Skelton were actually handmade by an old world artisan named Matheis Gagne. The grips were usually crafted from a single piece of carciasian walnut. They were then hand chiseled to achieve a tight frame fit. Next, Mr. Gagne would work off a drawing of the purchaser's hand to design the form of the grips. He then used a file to shape the grip. Mr. Gagne would use an old v-notch cutting tool to carve the exquistite checkering. They were finished with linseed oil and some shellac was added to give them a sealed effect and slight sheen.

Each set of Roper grips is unique. They rarely appear on the market. As a period aftermarket S&W revolver accessory, Roper grips have no peer.

I am fortunate enough to own one revolver with Roper grips. It is a .22LR Colt Official Police. These N frame Roper grips are already bid up higher than I paid for my whole revolver and grips in a pawn shop last year. Yep, this is going to be an interesting auction!

Smith & Wesson Box on Ebay

A Smith & Wesson No. 38 Automatic Ejector box from the 1800's. The box is in near mint condition with much of the gold leaf still present.The outside of the box is green with hardly any wear showing. The inside has a little staining due to placement of the pistol (I would assume) when the box was still in use. This auction is for the box only. There is a little wear on each top corner of the label as shown in the pictures and there is one small flake gone on the top, about the size of comma in a sentence. This is a remarkable find for the true collector. It is original and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

Ebay Insanity in Bike Parts

Vintage Schwinn Bicycle Tail Light
This is an old tail light in ok shape. The glass says Schwinn in a cross shape is complete and no chips or cracks. There is minor rust and and spots on the chrome but no dent s or real pitting. Inside there is a rubber grommet loose. The inside glass is dirty and hard to clean as it is. The black rubber mounting spacer is clean and usable. This is about 1.75 inches across. Nice old light for your old bike.

Revolver Cylinder on Ebay

No kidding, this is a real listing!

COLT ? 22 Magnum Cylinder , BLUED .It is 22 Magnum & Fits my COLT Frontier Scout "62 and Steel Framed COLT New Frontier 22 Single Action Colts . It also fit in both of my COLT Buntline 9 &1/2 inch barreled Single Action Scouts AND My 61 Scout Kansas Centennial. I have FIRED this cylinder in ALL of these Guns !!!!!

This 22 Magnum Cylinder was tagged New 22 Magnum Colt in a batch of stuff that I bought from a Closed Gun Shop's GunSmith's Inventory.

I have Checked the Indexing in my own New Frontier , Frontier Scout "62 and both of my 9& 1/2 inch Barrel Buntlines and my 61 Kansas Centennial with a 22 extra long Cleaning Rod and they lined up Perfectly. Then I went and shot them with 22 Mag Ammo a few times to make sure!!! I AM NOT a Gunsmith ,just a Collector and NOT an Expert. Colt Cylinders are NOT MARKED with the COLT NAME so Whether or not this is a Colt Manufactured Cylinder or One that was made up by one of the Major Wholesale Gun Parts Suppliers when the COLT 22 Magnum Cylinders ran out , I do not know , BUT it fits and WORKS WELL in my 5 Colts that I shot them in. There were some Aftermarket Cylinders made to fit Colts and I assume that since this fits and works well in my Colts that it is either a Colt or one that was made to use in COLTS. I DO NOT State that this is definitley a Colt Manufactured Cylinder as in Colts that I have Bought NEW (old stock never sold ) I have come across at least 3 DIFFERENT Desiegns!!!! The deseign differences are - Fluted, Non-fluted and 3 different variations in the shell shrouding on the back of the Cylinder ! THIS ONE IS THE RIGHT SIZE AND DOES WORK AND WORKS GOOD in my 5 Colts!!!

Keep in mind that ALL MANUFACTURERS still say that the Cylinder should be checked by a Proffessional Gunsmith for proper Indexing or Timing ( cylinder holes lining up with the Barrel hole ) . If this cylinder does not time correctly in your Colt 22 you might need a new hand ( the arm that catches in the Ratchet on the back of the Cylinder and Turns it ) as yours might be worn. It is a SIMPLE proceedure for ANY Gunsmith.

A: I do it ALL THE TIME!!! While the 22long rifle ,22long and 22 short are ACTUALLY .22 of an inch ,which is either 22Hundredths OR 220 THOUSANDTHS of an inch the 22 MAGNUM is ACTUALLY .223 OR 223 THOUSANDTHS of an inch!! Rare Vintage Civil War Era Holster for Colt 1911 Auto!
Owned and Worn by the Outlaw Billy the Kid!

The seller states:

"Two years ago at this time I was privileged to offer at auction a magnificent antique holster previously carried by Union Army Major General Ardell "Butch" Bucheimer. This year I am pleased to be able to offer an equally magnificent specimen of museum quality. The story of my acquisition of this rare historical artifact begins in 1999. I was touring Europe with friends during September of that year, and happened to stay for the night at a remote French village by the name of Bonne, on the way to Geneva, Switzerland. At the Hotel bar, I struck up a conversation with an odd looking buck-toothed local, and though I had some difficulty understanding everything that was said, an answer to my query regarding the origin of the name of the place astounded me. I was told that the village was named after "Zee American outleau, Billy zee Kid" and that the village was actually founded by Billy's wife in the early 1880's.

The remainder of the story I heard that night was even more incredible, but over time and extensive historical research, I have come to believe it is true. It seems that contrary to popular belief, Billy Bonney was not a single man at the time of his death by the gun of Pat Garrett on July 14, 1881. He had, in fact, married a woman by the name of Maria Magdalena, in Santa Fe, NM, in March of 1881. The marriage ceremony was said to have been secretly performed by New Mexico territorial Governor Lew Wallace. I was told that Billy's (now pregnant) wife fled to France in the months following Billy's death at Fort Sumner, and eventually found her way to this area of France to gave birth to a son. It seems that to this day many of the residents of the village are direct descendents of William H. Bonney, although over time the name was Francofiled to drop the "y".

I struck up several friendships that night and continued to correspond with residents of the town over the years, eventually obtaining from one of them this fine holster reputed to be one of the last
remaining possessions of Billy belonging to the actual descendents of William H. Bonney. I despair to tell you what I had to give for this remarkable find, but suffice to say, I paid dearly. Although this holster is not Mexican carved or tooled in any way, it is beautifully embossed with the unmistakable "US" in oval (meaning "Union States"), as opposed to "CS" (meaning "Confederate States") It is also marked on the back with the historical name of Catney Enterprises. Louden Jacinto “Cat” Catney, whom I am given to understand was a noted saddle maker in Lincoln, New Mexico territory from 1852-1879, was rumored to have been awarded a contract by the US Government to produce holsters prior to and during the Civil War. Apparently this was an over-run or possibly a prototype that was given to Billy by Catney, to carry the prized, pearl handled 1911 Colt Auto Pistol that Billy wielded so effectively during the Lincoln County Wars. Catney soon after tragically lost his life in a mule shoeing accident.

Had he lived, would “Cat” Catney have achieved the fame and high reputation of noted leatherworkers like H.H. Heiser, Frazier, Gallup, F.A. Meanea, S.D. Myres or George Lawrence? We will never know. Does the fact that New Mexico finally became a state in 1912 lend further credence to the provenance of this wonderful example of 19th century leather-craft? You decide. This important historical holster is in remarkable condition for its age and would be a worthy addition to any collection. A: This is an amazing revelation! If this connection is true, it could be the most startling and controversial historical discovery of the 21st century. And it would, of course, add inestimable value to the item.

Q: I have Billy the Kid's original Colt M16 he also used during that same time period. Many people do not know that the AR-15 / M16 was actually used by Union Troops in the Civil War, and that Billy was given one by then President Harry Truman. Since it is an orginal M16, I am sure a trade is out of the question...but just wanted to share the info. Mar-24-07

A: Common belief holds that Billy carried a Model 1873 Winchester, possibly chambered in .38 Super to match his 1911 Colt Auto. But I have always felt there might be room for speculation there.

Q: Does this holster fit the semi auto version of the Colt 1911, Or the full auto version? Also, do you know what potential calibers of pistol this holster could carry? Mar-24-07
A: Either one in any caliber, although I understand that, like many pistoleros in the Southwest, Billy preferred the .38 Super, even though that ammo was difficult to obtain then (as it is now).

Q: The Civil War was in the 1860's Browning did not design the 1911 pistol until, well 1911, some 50 years later. Actually the holster looks to be a Chinese reproduction made out of water buffalo hide. Are you sure it wasn't made for Buffalo Bill when he toured the Orient? Mar-24-07

A: I am confident that the holster offered is unique. Possibly later in life, but during this period Maria was known to carry a Lefaucheux revolver in 12mm pinfire.

A: Coincidentally, I have recently entered into preliminary negotiations with the Bonne Ancestral Trust to acquire Billy's 1911 colt. As you probably know, Colt 1911 pistols manufactured prior to 1911 have negative serial numbers, and Billy's has an fairly high negative number.

Q: Have you done a leather sample yet, to determine the age and sex of the animal it was made from? Mar-23-07
A: I checked into that, but unfortunately, a comprehensive lab test cannot be performed without severely damaging the holster. However, based upon the suppleness, underlying lighter color and texture of the leather, I would guess it was made from the hide of a 3-4 year old non-angus cow (not bull) of medium stature in good physical condition.

Q: I am very interested in this rare holster. How much will you take to end the auction early? Mar-23-07
